MYTH: women that lift weights will bulk up

Our first guest post! This was written by Kristine (BELLAKRISTINE). Thank you!

It seems to me that a lot of women our age are afraid of the “man’s side of the gym” and I just want to make a few pointers and encourage everyone to lift weights and not be afraid!

I think the biggest myth we all hear and read about is that women will bulk up like bodybuilders if we lift heavy weights. Nothing can be further from the truth. It’s physically impossible for our bodies to bulk up like men’s, because we don’t have the hormones (mainly testosterone) that are needed to do so. Lifting heavy weights (not the little pink dumbbells) challenges your body and you’ll see results and become so much stronger.

“In fact, since muscle takes up less room than fat, women tend to lose inches when they strength train. So in addition to the physical benefits (increased metabolism, decreased risk of osteoporosis, increased strength), strength training will help you slim down too! Women, in fact, are more likely to tone up from strength training rather than bulk up. Research shows that women can add up to 30% lean muscle and end up looking thinner, feeling stronger and being firmer.” Written by Nicole Nichols, B.S. & Certified Fitness Instructor
“Without a doubt, weight lifting for women should be top priority when it comes to losing weight, toning up, or just plain getting into shape.”

Pros of lifting weights:
*Helps lose inches
*Increased strength
*Increased lean muscle mass
*Helps slim you down overall
*Increased metabolism
*Helps build and prevent muscle mass lost during old age
*Helps lose fat
*Decreased risk of osteoporosis
*Increase in muscle endurance, making aerobics much easier

*By lifting weights you'll burn more calories throughout the day (compared with just cardio)

So…girls…DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE STINKY SIDE OF THE GYM! Get your hot tush over there and show those boys what you’re made of!
